Seeds of Hope Jail Ministry & Reentry Services

Seeds of Hope Jail Ministry is headquartered at 603 N 8th St, Garden City, KS 67846. It's a non-profit organization formed in 2005 and provides spiritual and practical support for incarcerated individuals and their families. The organization also serves recent releasees by helping them reintegrate into the community.

Seeds of Hope strongly focuses on building relationships, providing job training and educational support, and fostering community partnerships. As a result, the organization is making a significant impact on the lives of those it serves and on the community as a whole.

Here are some of the ministry’s responsibilities:

Providing Spiritual and Practical Support for Inmates

The organization provides spiritual and practical support in various ways. For instance, some volunteers and mentors regularly visit the Finney County Jail and spend time with the inmates. This activity helps them to feel connected with the outside world.

Additionally, they offer guidance and counseling, as well as prayer and worship services. As a result, inmates remain connected to their faith and find hope in difficult circumstances.

Moral Reconation Therapy

MRT is a cognitive-behavioral treatment program that helps inmates develop new ways of thinking and behaving. It teaches them how to identify negative thinking patterns and replace them with positive, constructive ways of thinking.

By participating in the program, inmates learn important skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution. This not only assists them during incarceration but also equips them with valuable tools for success upon release.

Studies show that MRT has been successful in reducing the recidivism rate. For instance, a 2011 GEO Reentry Services report showed that MRT reduced the re-incarceration rate to 61%.

Seeds of Hope receives funding from various agencies for the MRT program, including the Garden City Alcohol Fund Advisory Committee. It also works closely with the Catholic Charities of SWKS to find affordable and convenient substance abuse treatment planning.

Strengths-Based, Family-Centered Case Management

Through this program, you and your incarcerated loved one or releasee can develop the skills and resources necessary to overcome the challenges they face. Primarily, it focuses on your strengths and assets and those of your loved one rather than weaknesses and deficits.

The program helps break the cycle of intergenerational incarceration and poverty in various ways. For instance, inmates, releasees, and their families build stronger, more supportive relationships. As a result, it's unlikely for a strengthened family to become involved with the criminal justice system.

In addition, the program offers services like counseling, job training, financial management, and assistance with finding housing. Such services improve the economic stability of former inmates, which can help to break the poverty cycle.

Community Collaboration

Seeds of Hope recognizes that successful reentry into the community requires collaboration. For this reason, the organization actively seeks community partnerships to serve inmates and recent releasees better.

Some of the community organizations it collaborates with include the following:

  • Kansas Social and Rehabilitative Services
  • Emmaus House Homeless Shelter
  • Seeds of Hope Jail Ministry, Inc. is rooted in the belief that the answer to reducing crime in our neighborhoods lies in changing the hearts and minds of offenders. We work toward this goal by offering the love of God and the gospel message to incarcerated and recently released individuals in ways that build positive, supportive relationships and encourage long-term connections to local faith communities.
